HISTORY ASPECTS:The Corsair Mk II JT537 was flown by Sub-Lieutenant Donald J. Sheppard of the 1836 Naval Air Squadron part of the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy during World War II. Unlike its American counterparts the British-operated Corsairs were adapted for carrier operations with clipped wing tips to fit inside Royal Navy hangars. Sheppard a Canadian pilot became the only Fleet Air Arm Corsair ace scoring five aerial victories against enemy aircraft in the Pacific Theater.The 1836 Naval Air Squadron was assigned to HMS Victorious where it participated in operations against Japanese forces. Sheppard’s Corsair saw action in the Pacific where Royal Navy carriers played a critical role in supporting Allied offensives. The Corsair Mk II was well-suited for these engagements boasting impressive firepower rugged construction and superior speed compared to many enemy aircraft. During operations off Sumatra and the Sakishima Islands Sheppard engaged Japanese aircraft achieving multiple victories in intense aerial combat.
