HISTORY ASPECTS:The F-4J (UK) Phantom ZE359 was one of the 15 ex-United States Navy F-4Js acquired by the Royal Air Force in the mid-1980s. These aircraft were brought into service to address an operational gap within the RAF’s air defense units following delays in the introduction of the Tornado F3. The aircraft underwent modifications to integrate with RAF systems including compatibility with Skyflash missiles and upgraded avionics. Painted in the iconic black and yellow tiger-striped markings of No. 74 Squadron ZE359 operated from RAF Wattisham a key base for intercepting potential threats during the latter years of the Cold War.No. 74 Squadron famously known as the "Tiger Squadron" was reactivated in 1984 to operate the F-4J (UK) fleet. ZE359 and its counterparts played a critical role in defending UK airspace especially during heightened tensions with the Warsaw Pact.
