The SR-71A was designed for long-range high-speed high-altitude intelligence missions during the height of the Cold War. Capable of flying at speeds exceeding Mach 3 and at altitudes of over 85000 feet the Blackbird was nearly impossible to intercept by enemy aircraft or surface-to-air missiles.
