One of the most famous P-38J Lightnings was flown by Major Thomas McGuire who served in the 431st Fighter Squadron of the 475th Fighter Group 5th Air Force in 1944. McGuires P-38J was known for its distinctive nose art featuring a cartoon of the comic strip character "Little Joe".McGuire flew his P-38J in a number of critical missions during the Pacific Theater of Operations including the Battle of the Bismarck Sea where he earned the Medal of Honor for his bravery in shooting down several enemy aircraft.
