HISTORY ASPECTS:The TBD-1 Devastator was a torpedo bomber that played a crucial role in the early years of World War II particularly during the Battle of Midway in June 1942. One notable aircraft from this period was the Devastator known as "Black 1" piloted by Lieutenant Commander Edward E. Lindsey of Torpedo Squadron 6 (VT-6) aboard the USS Enterprise. This aircraft represented the last of its kind in a changing naval aviation landscape as the Navy shifted towards more advanced dive bombers and torpedo bombers.On June 4 1942 during the first day of the Battle of Midway the TBD-1 Devastators of VT-6 launched a valiant yet challenging attack against the Japanese fleet. Despite the vulnerability of the Devastator to enemy anti-aircraft fire and the presence of enemy fighters Lindsey and his squadron pressed on with their torpedo attack.
